Born from the need to center the DJ within a live band context, Back to Basics emerged in 1990 as a foundational comm nity space. Created by Philadelphia natives King Britt and Dozia Blakey, it became one of the city's longest-running events—active through 2010—operat-ing twice weekly at Silk City. Saturdays and Mondays functioned as parallel sites of experimentation, drawing a wide spectrum of artists, from Questlove, Lady Alma, Dre & Vidal, and James Poyser to international figures such as Gilles Peterson, Nightmares on Wax, Charlie Dark, and Dego. The night also developed a reputation for introducing unreleased records from across the globe-early plays of artists like Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu, and Omar circulated through this space
